Protea Diamonds owner, Anthony Taitz, learned the diamond jewelry trade in Johannesburg, South Africa. After completing compulsory military service, he was offered a position in the family business to learn diamond cutting. Anthony spent three years learning to polish round and fancy diamonds as well as sorting rough diamonds, marking diamonds, cleaving diamonds, and dealing with wholesale clients all over the world. He was extremely lucky to have been taught by one of the world’s most knowledgeable people on polished diamonds. The diamond business is normally passed down from generation to generation and Anthony feels very lucky having learned the trade as it is a complex industry, and people usually have to pay to learn every aspect of the trade.
